Overview
TFS-Pilot
Derived from the TF rescue, it was developed in collaboration with the Italian Air Force and has become a part of the official equipment for military pilots as an emergency and survival tool.
The tool is made of a central piece which works both as a handle and as the receptacle for three folding blades
which are hinged on its end.
The principal blade is beak shaped, opens like scissors to 55 degrees revealing a third blade fixed to the central piece and with which it forms an upside down V.
The trigger opening is activated by a button found on one side of the central piece.
It is used to select and cut through static lines, ropes and belts under tension.
The knife blade, less specialized, transforms the tool into a folding knife for general use. This blade can be opened by pressing the thumb on the spoke fixed to the blade and rotating towards the outside until its blocking mechanism clicks in, this stops it from closing unless the lever incorporated on the back of the tool is pressed. This can also be carried out using only one hand.
The third blade is serrated, and provides an efficacious wood saw.
The tool is also provided with a cone shaped spoke in tempered steel, which can be found on the opposite end to the cord cutter, this transforms the TFS Pilot into a glass breaking hammer.
POTENTIAL USE
For all those who in their work environment may be subject to problems involving straps, seatbelts and ropes; the first blade allows one to cut through the above materials even when adherent to the body without risking injury, a danger which increases when it is necessary to work at speed. It permits one to work with precision in situations such as: non detachment from the static line, entanglement in parachute cords, abseiling ropes, and evacuation from damaged vehicles.
