Layaway Information

Layaway Policies

We offer a layaway plan on select products so you may pay for your order over a period of 60 days. Products that are eligible for layaway will show "Layaway Available: Yes" on the product page.

Here's how it works:

The total amount of the order excluding shipping, tax, or fees is divided into three (3) equal payments. The first payment is due with the order, the second payment is due 30 days later, and the final payment is due 60 days after the order.

There is a $15 non-refundable fee for layaway orders. This fee is added to the first payment along with the shipping and any tax. The first payment is made when the order is placed.

Example: Your order total is $300 plus $12.75 shipping and handling. If you select the layaway option, your payments would be:

  • $127.75 (1/3 of purchase = $100 + $15 layaway fee + $12.75 shipping)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)

If your initial payment is made by credit card, we will automatically process the 2nd and 3rd payments at the appropriate time using the same credit card information. You will be reminded via email that a payment will be charged. If you need to change this for any reason, please contact us.

For payments made other than credit card, payment must be received within seven (7) days of the due date or the order is subject to cancellation. You will receive a reminder via email that a payment is due.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for prepayment.

Additional products may be added to a layaway order without penalty. A new payment schedule will be calculated based on when additional products are added.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for early payment.

Cancellations of layaway orders are subject to a restocking/processing fee of 10% of the order total (not including tax and shipping costs). This restocking fee is in addition to the $15 non-refundable layaway fee.

Overview

With our ‘PIG’ we’ve attempted to combine Old World aesthetics and sensibilities, with the very latest in materials and design!

Details like our .27” titanium back-spacer, which we mill in-house, to our specifications, then drill and tap by hand, combine the inherent strength of the traditional back-spacer with the openness of standoffs. But, going them both one better with the strength of .27” titanium and a completely open back to make cleaning simply a matter of running any water or air source through the knife.

Our ¼” S30V blades, used both on our modified spear point, and our tanto, combines what many believe is the strongest knife steel on the market today, with grinds that give you an unusually sharp edge, in designs built for hard use.

We have jimped our blades both front and back, and also jimped our back-spacer on both sides, so that you have positive grip surfaces in any type of hold, and in any type of conditions. Wet hands, muddy hands, gloved hands, it won’t matter.

Although our blades come with a rough tumbled finish, the area around the pivot is mirror polished for an incredibly smooth action! We use bronze washers with white lithium, because it is a tried and true combination, and we’ve found, less susceptible to dirt than bearings.

Our pivot, and both the stop pin and the lanyard pin, we make by hand, on a 1943 lathe. They are all hardened 440 steel. And the stop pin and the lanyard pin are identical. Which basically means that you have a spare stop pin!

Our .080” titanium liners are full thickness from top to bottom making them thicker and stronger than many frame-locks, which although they do have thicker sections, are milled or relieved at some point to a thinner dimension for ease of flexibility.

If delicate and pretty is what you’re looking for, than probably our ‘PIG’ is not for you. But, please don’t give up on us, as we have a three finger Gentleman’s knife coming out, probably by the end of August, with a wide variety of beautiful handle slab options.

Our ‘PIG’ is built to be a hard use knife, a trusted tool. Brand new from the maker at the Blade Show 2013.

About the Maker

Red Blade Knives

Red Blade Knives was conceived in early 2012, and is the brainchild of three friends, Dan Rotblatt, Sean ?Griz? Coulter, and Robi Mukherjee. Once the idea was born, Dan quickly put together some initial design ideas. Because of Griz?s enthusiasm and Robi?s history with the military, it was decided that our first knife would be ?Grunt? capable and built as a rugged beast rather then just another pretty blade?thus the ?Pig? was born. ?Griz? likes ?Big? and ?Thick? and ?Strong? and this shows in every part of the ?Pig.? The ?Wasp? on the other hand, (our second offering) is based on a fied blade knfe designed and made by Dan some 30 years ago. It was his favorite carry and the 'Wasp' has all the grace, beauty and finesse that one might expect from the hands of a lifelong Artist! A variety of avenues for production were explored, and after several expensive disappointments it was decided that in order to have complete control over quality and time, we needed to purchase our own mill? In February of 2013 we did! Since that time have been working like good little ?Mill Monkeys? to produce knives and refine our techniques. Our knives are made completely in our studio here in California. The only two processes we send out are the water-jet cutting of the blanks and heat-treating the blades. Both of these are done here in the USA. (Though we do heat-treat our own stop pins, pivots and prototypes.). The quality of our materials is very important to us! We use S30V steel for the Pig, and CPM154 for the Wasp. Our liners are all 6AL-4V titanium. Handle slabs for the ?Pig? are coarse textured G10 in OD green, Black, or Tan. For the ?Wasp? there will be a wide variety of handle options including G10, carbon fiber and exotics. For us, the creation of a knife is a careful multi-step process. Each step is discussed. We draw a number of design sketches, and then examine the pros and cons of each. Paper cutouts and mock-ups can be made to get a feel for the size and shape. Once decided and refined, a hand-made prototype is constructed and scrutinized. At this point either Robi or Dan models the design, along with any new changes using 3D CAD software. Here the blade can be moved in virtual space, the position of the detent, stop pin and pivot can be shifted and verified. The code for the mill is generated from the virtual parts and they are cut out to create our second prototype. In addition, tooling plates must be made, computer code for the mill tweaked and tested for problems, and final fit and finish resolved. Once all that is done, if we?re satisfied, a limited number of knives are made. This is our last set of prototypes, and gives us the opportunity to make sure that we can make all the parts consistently, as well as acting as a further check for errors. Once this is done we can start making the knives in earnest. The parts are milled on our machine, and then finished by us by hand. The blades are hand ground and sharpened by Dan and area of each blade on which the washers will rest is mirror polished to give the knife the smoothest action possible. We assemble every knife personally, with the final action being set by Griz.
