About the Maker
Cumming, Bob
From 1964 until his retirement in 1997, Bob served in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Department of State, traveling throughout the world and living in numerous countries. During this time he developed a strong friendship with the late knifemaker Jim Nolen, who mentored Bob during the early stages of his knifemaking career. Bob sold his first knife in 1978 and since then his work has been admired around the world as well as the U.S. Following the 1983 terrorist bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, Bob designed and built a Bowie style "Purple Heart" commemorative knife, which is on permanent display at the Headquarters of the 2nd Marine Division, Camp LeJeune, NC. Bob's knives (Cumming Knives) have been carried by U.S. Marines, U.S. Commandos, U.S. Army Rangers and U.S. Navy Seals. Bob's hunters are small, usually with blades of 4 inches or less, hollow and flat ground, using various steels such as ATS-34, 440C, D2 and O-1. Cumming Knives have become synonymous with simplicity, strength, functionality and, above all, superb construction and finish. Bob's knives are used by guides, ranchers and sports men/women around the globe. Bob died in 2018.
