Layaway Information

Layaway Policies

We offer a layaway plan on select products so you may pay for your order over a period of 60 days. Products that are eligible for layaway will show "Layaway Available: Yes" on the product page.

Here's how it works:

The total amount of the order excluding shipping, tax, or fees is divided into three (3) equal payments. The first payment is due with the order, the second payment is due 30 days later, and the final payment is due 60 days after the order.

There is a $15 non-refundable fee for layaway orders. This fee is added to the first payment along with the shipping and any tax. The first payment is made when the order is placed.

Example: Your order total is $300 plus $12.75 shipping and handling. If you select the layaway option, your payments would be:

  • $127.75 (1/3 of purchase = $100 + $15 layaway fee + $12.75 shipping)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)

If your initial payment is made by credit card, we will automatically process the 2nd and 3rd payments at the appropriate time using the same credit card information. You will be reminded via email that a payment will be charged. If you need to change this for any reason, please contact us.

For payments made other than credit card, payment must be received within seven (7) days of the due date or the order is subject to cancellation. You will receive a reminder via email that a payment is due.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for prepayment.

Additional products may be added to a layaway order without penalty. A new payment schedule will be calculated based on when additional products are added.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for early payment.

Cancellations of layaway orders are subject to a restocking/processing fee of 10% of the order total (not including tax and shipping costs). This restocking fee is in addition to the $15 non-refundable layaway fee.

Happy Holidays! Our office will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as we spend time with our families. Regular office hours resume Thursday, 12/26.

Overview

This Magnate by Les George features a stonewashed blade with false tope edge, .183" blade stock and 1.290" blade depth, full tang construction with textured black G-10 scales. Comes with a kydex sheath and original box. New condition. Castle Gate exclusive.

The word “Magnate” means “a person (or knife) of great influence, importance, or standing in a particular enterprise, field of business.”   It shares the same Latin preface as MagnaCut … “Magna” which is ancient Latin for “great” also meaning awesome and generally badass. In many ways we designed this knife as a showcase for the steel itself, a functional design framing an extreme set of capabilities.
The Magnate is 100% made in the USA by Les George Knives using only USA sourced materials.

Regarding the magnate, Les George explains, “I wanted to create a fixed blade that focused on all-around usefulness and functionality, the perfect companion for any adventure.”
Hal Van Hercke, Owner of CastleGate recalls how the project started.  “I met with Les about reproducing a very successful knife we had made several years ago.  It was a mid-sized fixed blade with a handle that emphasized comfort and control for really demanding use.”  Les immediately pulled a custom prototype out of his bag that was nearly identical to our knife, but more refined, more modern, and subtly better in every respect.” “This is why you come to Les George.”  I thought to myself.  “This is a knife I have been wanting to make for a really long time!” Les said.  As we looked at both knives side by side on the table Les asked, “The only question now is which one should we make, mine or yours?” “Yours!” I said enthusiastically, “Why do you think I am standing here?” And with that the Magnate was born…

Why all this fanfare about a knife steel? Well, CPM MagnaCut is a modern “super steel”.  It is a stainless tool steel with an excellent combination of toughness and wear resistance.  It was invented by head knife steel nerd Dr. Larin Thomas PhD
The major balancing acts in stainless knife design are edge retention versus toughness and hardness versus corrosion resistance. Through the magic of modern metallurgy Larin had created what seems impossible. Magnacut doesn’t really compromise. It manages to offer outstanding scores in all four dimensions.

About the Maker

George, Les
George, Les

I began making knives in 1992 and have been fortunate enough to have worked with and learned from some of the best knife makers in the world. The maker most responsible for my progression is Stan Fujisaka of Kaneohe, Hawaii. I had been making knives for several years before I met Stan, but he opened the door to a new level of knife making for me and shared his considerable knowledge with me freely. I will continue to refine my craft and to build on all that I have learned so far. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1997 and spent over 10 years in its service. I served as a heavy equipment mechanic, an Embassy Guard in foreign lands and a Senior Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician in many of the world's garden spots. I have trained in Explosive Dynamic Entry, Advanced Access and Disablement, Improvised Explosives and Devices, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Close Quarters Combat and many other technical and tactical skills. I have deployed to, lived and worked in Laos, Thailand, North and South Korea, Peru, Mozambique, South Africa, Iraq and many other places in between. Since my departure from the Marines I have worked as an Unexploded Ordnance Technician clearing unexploded munitions, from projectiles to land mines from old training areas. As an EOD Team leader in Iraq, I oversaw over 300 EOD responses and over 100 Improvised Explosive Devices where rendered safe. All of these experiences have given me a unique view of how I think knives and tools should be designed, made and used. I look forward to many new things during this new phase in my career. There is a lot of work left for me to do to get ready for more work to come.
