Note from Huxley Walters:
The listed “Folding Hunter”, Serial No. J1171, also, was made by De Leon and is the highest serial numbered Model J that I have observed to-date. In my book, “The Artistry Of Ralph P Bone”, I estimated there were a total of about 900 Models J made by, both, Bone and De Leon. However, the serial number on this knife proves that, at least 1071 were made. All knife models made at Ralph Bone Knife Co. commenced with serial number 101.
The new owner, Hipp, bought the company in mid-1976. De Leon made all the knives at the company from mid 74 (the date Bone left the company) to the end of 78, at which time, De Leon, also, left. Sometime in 1978, Hipp, changed the serial number system, by which the new serial number system commenced with the model letter, a two-digit number representing the year, followed by an additional two-digit number, representing the quality made that year to-date. Hipp changed everything. He had been a saw blade maker; De Leon taught him whatever he may have learned about knife-making. Huxley
Arizona Custom Knives, currently, lists for sale J1171, the highest serial number Model J “Folding Hunter” that I’m aware of, indicating that, at least, 1071 Models J were made, in two primary blade lengths. (All standard production knife models commenced with serial number 101.) To my understanding, three inch and four inch blade Models J were serialized together.
In my book, I estimated that the total standard production of Models J at Ralph Bone Knife Co. totaled about 900. I recall that Ralph, also, told a fellow enthusiast that he didn’t recall any Model J numbered in the 1000s. De Leon would have made all those thereafter. One, always, stands correction!
De Leon’s company offered 3” 4” and a whopping 6” Model J.
