Overview
First of all, I'll tell you what it is, and then all the story and such behind it.
This Lawndale California drop point hunter by Bob Loveless features a satin finished blade with .178" blade stock and .987" blade depth, full tapered tang construction. The handle has brass bolsters with steel pins, walnut wood scales with steel pins and a lanyard hole. Comes with a zippered case and a brown leather sheath that is not original, but fits nicely. It has scuffs, scratches, has been used and carried, has a crack in the blade right at the plunge line, there is a grind mark right at the top of the makers mark, it has pitting, patina, oxidation, has been resharpened and potentially ground and profiled some. The handle is not original, the guard and scales were removed and bolsters and walnut were added. Poor condition.
However, even as bad as it is, it is still a Loveless. And it would still make a great user!
Here is what the consigner had to say about it's origin:
My father found an old retired farmer that had a bunch of ‘stuff’ for sale in his barn. Rummaging through the items, my father found the Loveless knife. When he asked the farmer about it, the farmer said, “It was my daily user and I actually used it every day, BUT, the person who built the knife [Bob Loveless] didn’t build it right [for everyday use], so I fixed it.”
And fix it he did....
I spoke with John Denton about this knife because I wanted to be sure it was actually a legit Loveless before listing.
This is what he said:
That is a odd creature. But the blade is 100% ol' man Loveless. I think the handle was changed, Loveless would never do the handles like that. But a good using knife, I have one old Loveless Lawndale that the blade was snapped in half, a friend put it back by welding it. So I just use it around the house to cut boxes as it is wicked sharp.
Hope some one will use it!
