Cur Custom Blades
In 2013, my journey into the art of knife-making began as a humble hobby, but it swiftly evolved into a fervent passion. Crafting knives has become an integral part of my life, and I have successfully transformed this love into a thriving side business, complementing my primary role as a manager of a genetics laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University. At present, I primarily create knives through custom orders and production lines. With custom orders, I collaborate closely with clients to bring their ideas to life or present them with a selection of popular styles that have delighted previous customers. My area of expertise lies in the production of bushcraft, hunting, and culinary knives. The allure of crafting bushcraft knives stems from their precise functions and the challenges inherent in optimizing their performance for specific tasks. Similarly, culinary knives demand impeccable cutting capabilities without inducing hand fatigue, emphasizing the significance of balance. While my initial focus was on hunting knives, it was through designing and crafting kitchen knives that I truly delved into the nuances of knife design and edge geometry. To shape my knives, I employ two distinct methods: forging and stock removal. With several years of experience in forging, I have come to relish this aspect of knife-making. The process entails manipulating heated steel using hammers, tongs, and occasionally power equipment such as power hammers and presses. Alternatively, I employ the stock removal technique, wherein a steel bar is meticulously shaped into the desired knife form. Forging and stock removal represent two different pathways to achieve a knife's form, yet the quintessence of knife-making lies in the crucial stage of heat treatment. Often referred to as the "soul" of the knife, heat treatment involves a series of intricate processes that transform unhardened steel into a finely tuned cutting instrument. These processes captivate my fascination, driving me to relentlessly refine the art of heat treatment for each knife I create. Regarding handle materials, I predominantly favor the use of natural woods due to their inherent charm and distinctive characteristics. Among these materials, maple holds a special place in my heart, as it showcases a myriad of captivating natural figures.
