Layaway Information

Layaway Policies

We offer a layaway plan on select products so you may pay for your order over a period of 60 days. Products that are eligible for layaway will show "Layaway Available: Yes" on the product page.

Here's how it works:

The total amount of the order excluding shipping, tax, or fees is divided into three (3) equal payments. The first payment is due with the order, the second payment is due 30 days later, and the final payment is due 60 days after the order.

There is a $15 non-refundable fee for layaway orders. This fee is added to the first payment along with the shipping and any tax. The first payment is made when the order is placed.

Example: Your order total is $300 plus $12.75 shipping and handling. If you select the layaway option, your payments would be:

  • $127.75 (1/3 of purchase = $100 + $15 layaway fee + $12.75 shipping)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)

If your initial payment is made by credit card, we will automatically process the 2nd and 3rd payments at the appropriate time using the same credit card information. You will be reminded via email that a payment will be charged. If you need to change this for any reason, please contact us.

For payments made other than credit card, payment must be received within seven (7) days of the due date or the order is subject to cancellation. You will receive a reminder via email that a payment is due.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for prepayment.

Additional products may be added to a layaway order without penalty. A new payment schedule will be calculated based on when additional products are added.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for early payment.

Cancellations of layaway orders are subject to a restocking/processing fee of 10% of the order total (not including tax and shipping costs). This restocking fee is in addition to the $15 non-refundable layaway fee.

Overview

Original Horn Handled Collins & Co. Hartford No. 1005 Engineers Bolo/Machete. Collins made these from the Spanish American War until just after World War 1. 1898-1918. This one having horn handle scales likely puts it on the earlier side of those dates. By WW1 they were almost all wood handles. Huge heavy blade, nice stamp still mostly visible. Horn handle scales have some chips/dings/holes, has some separation from the tang, but overall solid. Really wild and rare piece, and one of the strangest blades ever issued by the U.S. military.

Collins made these from the Spanish American War until shortly after WWl. They were issued with smooth leather scabbards, as well as tooled leather scabbards (THIS ONE DOES NOT COME WITH A SCABBARD).

In general these Machetes were not US marked. Some of the more earlier ones exhibit a Green Horn handle opposed to wood. The horn had a greenish color and tended to be susceptible to insects/worms. (this one does have some insect holes)

This example is in fair condition, and would make a great addition to any edged weapon collection. It has some rust and pitting, some insect holes in the horn scales. This one has an "E" carved into the scale by the original user.

About the Maker

Collins & Co.

The Collins Company was founded by brothers Samuel Watkinson Collins and David Collins and their cousin William Wells in 1826. Purchasing a property along the Farmington River in the town of Canton, Connecticut, later renamed Collinsville. The Collins Company line of products would grow over the years to include not only axes, but also machetes, hatchets adzes, brush hooks, picks, shovels, knives, swords, bayonets and plows, making them the world’s leading manufacturer of edge tools. The Collins line of machetes was so popular in Central and South America that they were referred to as a “Collins” and 90% of the machetes sold in these countries were made by The Collins Company. The company operated several manufacturing facilities in Guatemala, Mexico, Columbia and Brazil. Collins bayonets were used during the Civil War, axes and picks and other tools made their way to the California Gold Rush, Admiral Peary brought numerous Collins products on his trek to the North Pole, and Collins tools were used almost exclusively for the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. The Collins Company manufactured shovels, picks, axes and machetes for World War I and over 1 million machetes were purchased by the U.S. Military for World War II. 140 years after the inception of the Collins Company, the factory closed its doors in 1966.
