Overview
Built on an innovative split spring design, the classic whittler pattern is a perennial favorite among users and collectors alike. The GEC #38 English Whittler retains the timeless serpentine handle shape and large Wharncliffe primary blade paired with two smaller blades for fine work: one coping and one pen. Satin finished blades are handsome and utilitarian while polished and grooved bolsters lend enduring style. This Northfield UN-X-LD version comes with Burnt Orange Jig Bone covers and crest shield.
Blade: The #38 English Whittler has a classic trio of blades. The stout, swedge equipped Wharncliffe primary blade handle the heavy work and rides on both springs for added strength and safety in use. At the opposite end of the handle you will find flat ground pen and coping blades for detail tasks. All three are flat ground and satin finished 1095 high carbon steel with nail nicks for opening with "UN-X-LD" in Old English script etched on the main blade.
Handle: Natural burnt orange jig bone covers are framed between polished and grooved nickel silver bolsters, all flush fit and brass pinned to brass liners in the traditional style. The gently curving serpentine handle is both visually appealing and comfortable in use with a gentle taper toward one end for a secure grip in heavy use.
Each Great Eastern Cutlery knife ships rolled in wax paper in a shipping tube with company information on the front.
1095 High Carbon Steel: Highly popular, simple carbon steel. Used extensively by both production and custom knife makers. Low abrasive wear due to low carbide content but very tough and easy to sharpen. Not corrosion resistant and will rust without proper care. TOPS utilizes a differential heat treat process which delivers a harder edge and tougher spine.
