Kruger, Frik
My knifemaking career started during 2000. While on a fishing trip, I picked up a knife next to the dam where we were fishing, with a horrible handle fitted to it. I went to a friend of mine who was making knives in his spare time for some advice to fit a proper handle. On completion of this knife, he gave me a piece of N690 and said that I must make my own knife. Eventually after I decided on the design of the knife that would fit on this piece of steel, I started with the hard work with very little assistance from my friend (I used his belt sander). After many hours and days I completed the knife and was from then on totally hooked on knife making. I have been making knives since then on a part-time basis, and have received many orders for my knives. I retired at the end of December 2015 and now have time to do what my passion is. I have attended a course with Kevin Harvey on the making of Damascus steel and am now totally addicted. Using my own fully-equipped knifemaking studio, I now forge my own Damascus steel on-site. – Frik J Kruger
